I’ve been creating different NVME stick and testing different options lately, most all of them some flavor of butterbian. Some of the times when I remove one NVME stick and replace it with another the system will not see that it has a bootable image and break to the BIOS/UEFI screen.

The computer is a GMKtek NUC with a snap off lid so it’s easy access to the NVME drives.

It seems this issue has been seen a lot and the Google recommended fix is to make sure that the grub installation uses the --removable option to create option.

> In the Debian expert installer, the option to install GRUB to the **removable media path** copies the bootloader to a hard-coded fallback location (`EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI`) on your EFI system partition rather than relying solely on registering an entry in the motherboard’s non-volatile RAM (NVRAM).

I’m not sure which options butterbian uses for grub-install.

EDIT: From booting the butterknife 0.2.15 ISO and looking at /opt/butterknife/lib/installer.py the --removable option is not used by butterknife installer for grub.

0.2.16 added. Thanks for a good idea.
